Why we love Miss Carmel…

Miss Carmel is an absolute legend of a ballet teacher, with so much knowledge, experience, and wisdom.

The other day I was handing out red and blue Heaven@Earth USBs and jokingly asked her, “Do you want the red pill or the blue pill?”

After I explained the Matrix reference, she didn’t miss a beat and said,

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, step-mums, grandmothers, mother figures, carers, mentors and strong women who hold our dance community together. Your love, sacrifice and behind-the-scenes magic never goes unnoticed.

And to anyone missing their mum today, grieving, or carrying a heavy heart, I’m sending you love.

Today also feels like the perfect moment to acknowledge my own mum, Cindy Johnston, who has been a constant and a leader in the Tasmanian dance world for decades. From her competitive days (yes, she’ll still proudly mention beating a young Graham Murphy!) to helping shape the evolution of dance in Tasmania, including pushing for the Jazz and Lyrical categories to be recognised, her impact has been extraordinary.

She brought summer schools to Tasmania over 35 years ago and has mentored generations of dancers who have gone on to work professionally across Australia and internationally, including so many who became swings, a true testament to her training, resilience and work ethic.

Most of all, Mum taught that dance is something to love, not just something to win. That lesson has shaped everything I do.

Mum, thank you for your legacy, your heart, and the countless dancers you’ve inspired.

This is not your traditional dance show.

And it’s not meant to be.

Heaven at Earth has been created as an experience — one that moves beyond steps and into storytelling, emotion, and art.

It’s deep.
It’s meaningful.
It’s a little outside the box… and intentionally so.

We are pushing boundaries — blending dance, film, and creative expression to create something that feels immersive, thought-provoking, and, at times, transformative.

It won’t be for everyone.

But if you feel a pull…
If something in you is curious…
If you’re drawn to something a little different…

Then we highly recommend coming along for the journey.

Because that’s exactly what it is.

Our students have worked incredibly hard to bring this vision to life, and I am so proud of the courage, creativity, and commitment they have shown throughout this process.
