Equinox Dance & Film was created from the belief that dance should build strong dancers, but more importantly, strong humans. Founded by Samantha Johnston after more than four decades within the dance industry as a dancer, professional performer, teacher, choreographer and business owner, Equinox combines high-quality technical training with confidence, creativity, resilience and self-expression. Because technique and performance matter—but self-worth matters more. When dancers discover what lights them up, motivation becomes natural, confidence grows, and dance becomes something that enriches their lives rather than defines their worth.

 

Our philosophy centres around self-love, self-awareness and healthy confidence. We teach dancers to navigate pressure, comparison and disappointment while learning to trust themselves, regulate their emotions, develop resilience and have the courage to be seen. Competition can be wonderful when held in perspective, and excellence can be pursued without perfection becoming the measure of a young person’s value. Our aim is for every dancer to leave Equinox knowing themselves more deeply and carrying the confidence they develop here into the rest of their life.

 

Our training reflects the many ways dancers can experience their art. Alongside RAD ballet pathways and competitions, students have opportunities in live performance, community events, flash mobs and Dance for Film. Drawing on Samantha’s professional entertainment experience, including work with Disney and Warner Bros., Equinox connects traditional training with contemporary performance opportunities. Dance for Film adds another dimension, teaching students how movement, storytelling and emotion translate through the camera while developing precision, creativity and screen presence.
