There are moments in dance that feel like a turning point. This is one of them.

I feel so compelled to share this raw vision of Evie — improvising, creating, and dancing completely from the inside out.

This was filmed in situ — meaning Evie stepped into the environment, felt into the space, and allowed the movement to come to her in real time. No rehearsed choreography. No practiced sequence. Just presence, intuition, and trust.

Many of our junior dancers created their own choreography and refined it for a short time — which was beautiful to witness. But this… this was different. This was Evie completely in the moment. Raw. Open. Responsive.

She hadn’t rehearsed. She simply danced.

The way she listened, adapted, and took direction in the space was absolutely outstanding. To lead through intuitive choreography at her age — to trust her instincts and allow the steps to arise naturally in situ — is something truly special.

So often dancers are taught from the outside in: copy the steps, perfect the technique, match the shape. But when a dancer learns to move from the inside out, something shifts. It becomes embodied. Honest. Alive.

Evie, I am so proud of you.
This feels like the beginning of a new world of dance — and it is so refreshing to witness.

Redefining Competition: A New Era of Dance at Equinox

As I step into this new chapter for Equinox Dance and Film, I’m filled with both excitement and purpose. This year, we’ll be embracing a refreshed focus on competitive dance — but through a new lens.

I’m often asked what inspired this shift, and the answer lies in my story. I’m the only second-generation studio owner in Hobart — the daughter of a dance studio owner- Cindy Johnston (Body Language Dance) and someone who grew up immersed in the Eisteddfod world. For much of my childhood, the stage lights of competition were my second home. When I moved interstate to pursue dance professionally, I was affectionately known as “the comp girl.” Coming from Tasmania, I thought that was all there was — that success in dance was measured through results.

But as my career unfolded — through professional dance work, modelling, photography, and film — I experienced another side of the industry. I saw how dance could be expansive, collaborative, expressive, and deeply human. I also began to understand how judging a subjective art form could sometimes unintentionally diminish a young dancer’s sense of self-love, worth, and creativity.

That awareness has shaped everything I do today. So now, I’m ready to reimagine what “competition” can look like.
This year, I’m thrilled to be cultivating a new generation of healthy, competitive dancers — dancers who perform not just for results, but for growth, joy, and artistry.

At Equinox Dance and Film, competitions will be one focus — but not the focus. We’ve always offered solo, duo, and ballet group opportunities, but now we’re expanding with intention. Our goal is to honour the discipline and dedication that competition brings, while nurturing self-worth, teamwork, and purpose that extend far beyond the stage. So as we step forward into this new season, I invite you to come on this journey with us — one that honours where we’ve come from, but also imagines what’s possible for the future of dance and the dancers who will shape it. 🌍💫

I just want to speak from a place of love 💞

Love, connection, unity — because that’s what I believe changes the world. 🙏🏼

For a long time now, I’ve intuitively felt the rising tide of hatred and division in our country.
I’ve felt it in conversations, online, in the energy around us, I felt helpless — like there was nothing I could do to stop it or change it.

After the massacre, I felt angry too.
Deeply angry. Shocked. Heartbroken.
And those feelings are real and human.

But ultimately, what’s done is done.
We can’t change what has already happened — we can only choose how we move forward from here.

If you find yourself holding resentment or hatred toward the Prime Minister and his government, I invite you to let it go — not for him, but for you.

Carrying that weight only hurts your own heart. Deep down, when he stood and made those speeches after the mass shooting, he would have known. 🙏🏼
That awareness, that reckoning, is part of his journey and his lessons to learn. Hatred rarely reaches the person it’s aimed at — it just poisons the one holding it.

I also want to gently remind us to be mindful of what we consume.
If you’re not paying for the product, you are the product.
Be careful when absorbing bias, outrage, and perspectives on social media.
What we feed our minds shapes how we see each other.

I recently saw the video of Ahmed Al Ahmed who saved so many lives by stopping the shooter from continuing.
After everything he had been through, he still said, “We live in the world’s best country.”
That moved me deeply.

I highly recommend if you havent seen it, to prioritise seeing it.

Let’s remember who we are.🙏🏼

✨ Infinity Project 2.0 – Expressions of Interest Now Open! ✨

We’re filming in early February 2026 at the stunning Eagle Hawk Neck and Port Arthur, and we’re looking for dancers aged 10–25 who want to be part of something creatively different for Tasmania.

If you’d like to be involved, please send a short paragraph about why you want to join the project.

We’re filming in early February 2026 at the stunning Eagle Hawk Neck and Port Arthur, and we’re looking for dancers aged 10–25 who want to be part of something creatively different for Tasmania.
