Catwalk Dance is a unique confidence-building class created by Samantha Johnston, combining decades of experience in dance, modelling, choreography and youth development.

Having trained in catwalk and modelling from a young age, Samantha was fortunate to be involved in fashion parades both locally and in Melbourne and to learn from talented choreographers within the modelling industry.
Throughout her career she has choreographed numerous fashion parades and runway events, and has witnessed firsthand the positive impact catwalk training can have on young people.

Today, as a Self Love Innovator working through dance, art & film, Samantha’s focus is helping young people build confidence from the inside out.
Catwalk Dance is open to everyone and combines runway walking, posture, presentation skills, musicality, movement and fun choreography designed specifically for the catwalk.
Students learn to walk with confidence, move to the beat of the music, develop strong posture and express themselves in a supportive and encouraging environment.

More than a modelling class, Catwalk Dance is about self-expression, confidence, presence and learning to feel comfortable in your own skin. Students will have opportunities to work towards performances, runway presentations and creative film projects as the program develops.

Classes are offered in three-week blocks and are held on Monday evenings from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.

While the landscape is undeniably beautiful, I found myself drawn to the darker undercurrents that move quietly beneath it.
The parts of ourselves and our lives that are often unseen, unresolved or waiting to be acknowledged.

This work explores the tension between surrender and resistance, and the reality that light and darkness are not enemies. They are both part of the human experience.

As you watch, I invite you to reflect on your own journey and ask yourself:

I’ve been part of the dance industry for a very long time (most of my life), and after stepping away from the culture of competition a little, I’ve found myself reflecting on something that has been present for years.

A genuine thought/question for our industry:

If a dancer has spent the majority of their training life with one teacher or studio, is it ethical for a new studio to advertise that dancer as part of their achievements, technique, or success without acknowledging where much of that foundation was built?

Of course, the dancer deserves much credit. Talent, dedication, resilience, and countless hours of work belong to them. But let’s not pretend that proficient training happens by accident.

Teachers invest years into developing technique, artistry, confidence, discipline, and performance quality.
Behind every strong dancer are countless hours of corrections, encouragement, planning, mentoring, and reading and aligning the dancer’s flow of movement.

I’m not asking for solutions, and I’m certainly not directing this at any one person or studio.
It’s simply a genuine curiosity and an invitation for conversation.
I’ve watched this happen for many years across our industry, and I’ve often wondered where people sit on the ethics of acknowledgment and professional courtesy.

No teacher owns a dancer.
Students grow, move, evolve, and find new paths, as they should.

In an industry that often speaks about respect, should acknowledgment be part of that respect?

I’d love to hear different perspectives.

Somehow I’ve clocked up well over 100 classes at Club 42, and I’ve only just found a moment to stop and acknowledge it.

What started as simply turning up to a Pilates class has become so much more.

Club 42 isn’t just a fitness studio. It’s a community.

Every time I walk through the doors, I’m greeted by genuine warmth, encouragement, and an energy that makes you want to keep showing up-not because you have to, but because you want to.

The quality of the classes, the attention to detail, and the care that goes into every experience is second to none. It’s clear that Zara and the team have created something very special.

As someone who spends a lot of time building community through dance and the arts, I deeply appreciate spaces that bring people together in a positive, supportive way. Club 42 does exactly that.

Behind the scenes of filming in nature...

Totally engrossed in a drone recce down on the Peninsula, checking potential drone shots, and imagining all the creative possibilities for a future shoot...

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to me, a rather determined leech had decided I looked like a great mode of transport and was making its way up my leg.

Thankfully, I was wearing what can only be described as THE BEST tights ever, because despite its best efforts, the little hitchhiker couldn’t penetrate them!

Needless to say, the leech was evicted, I survived the encounter, and the recce continued.

Just one of the many glamorous behind-the-scenes moments nobody tells you about when you’re creating dance films in the great outdoors. Beautiful locations, breathtaking scenery... and occasionally, unexpected wildlife assistants.

And a special thank you to Lululemon for creating such resilient tights. You may not have designed them with anti-leech technology in mind, but they certainly passed the test! 🙌

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, step-mums, grandmothers, mother figures, carers, mentors and strong women who hold our dance community together. Your love, sacrifice and behind-the-scenes magic never goes unnoticed.

And to anyone missing their mum today, grieving, or carrying a heavy heart, I’m sending you love.

Today also feels like the perfect moment to acknowledge my own mum, Cindy Johnston, who has been a constant and a leader in the Tasmanian dance world for decades. From her competitive days (yes, she’ll still proudly mention beating a young Graham Murphy!) to helping shape the evolution of dance in Tasmania, including pushing for the Jazz and Lyrical categories to be recognised, her impact has been extraordinary.

She brought summer schools to Tasmania over 35 years ago and has mentored generations of dancers who have gone on to work professionally across Australia and internationally, including so many who became swings, a true testament to her training, resilience and work ethic.

Most of all, Mum taught that dance is something to love, not just something to win. That lesson has shaped everything I do.

Mum, thank you for your legacy, your heart, and the countless dancers you’ve inspired.
